Non-Executive Board Members


Non-Executive Board Members provide a valuable external perspective and ensure that executive members of the Management Board are supported and constructively challenged in their role.

They are recruited via fair and open competition, which takes into account the code of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments as best practice.

Prof Julia KingProfessor Julia King

Julia King CBE FREng became Vice-Chancellor of Aston University in 2006. Prior to that, from 2004, she was principal of the Engineering Faculty at Imperial College. Before that, Julia was Chief Executive of the Institute of Physics and has worked in senior managerial positions at Rolls Royce plc.

Julia King works closely with Government as a member of the Ministerial Group on Manufacturing, the Committee on Climate Change, and the National Security Forum.

She spent four years advising the Ministry of Defence as Chair of the Defence Science Advisory Council, and five years as a non-executive member of the Technology Strategy Board.

Julia led the ‘King Review’ to examine the vehicle and fuel technologies that could help to reduce carbon emissions from road transport.

Dame Julie MellorDame Julie Mellor

Julie Mellor is a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in the public sector consulting practice. She has experience of regulation on consumer and matters and was Chair of the Equal Opportunities Commission from 1999 to 2005.

Prior to that she spent 20 years in HR including as HR Director of British Gas and working in HR roles with TSB, Shell UK and in local government.

Julie is active in the Confederation of British Industry on skills and equality issues and was a Board member of the National Consumer Council from 2002 to 2007.

Julie has chaired voluntary organisations including the Employers Forum on Disability and the Fatherhood Institute. She is currently a board member of the Green Alliance.

Dr Brian Woods-ScawenDr Brian Woods-Scawen

Brian Woods-Scawen CBE, BA (Econ), MA, LLD, D. Univ, FCA, FRSA, DL has a range of non-executive appointments in the public and private sectors.

He is Chairman of the West Bromwich Building Society, a member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, a Board member of the Office for Legal Complaints, a Board member of the Government Office for the West Midlands and Treasurer of Warwick University.

Brian is a Chartered Accountant. He was formerly Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and a member of the PwC Global Board.
