Digital infrastructure

The Council for Science and Technology recently wrote to Government about the UK's digital infrastructure mentioning that while good progress is being made in this area, it is essential that Government continues to prioritise broadband.

Spending Review

At their December 2010 meeting the Council wanted to pass on their congratulations to Adrian Smith, Director General Science and Research, BIS, on the excellent outcome to the Spending Review.

The rich CST discussion surfaced a number of issues, which the Council felt should be emphasised in the letter (PDF, 34 Kb) .

Members Appointed to the Council for Science and Technology

The Prime Minister today re-appointed five members including Professor Dame Janet Finch as independent co-chair of CST for one year, appointed four ex-officio members, and launched the recruitment of up to around ten new members to the Council for Science and Technology (CST). The appointments will commence on 1 January 2011 when current members’ appointments expire.

CST has published a report on the 1st of March 2010 "A Vision for UK Research" (PDF, 1.5 Mb)  

CST looked at how to ensure the UK research base maintains its high level of performance and productivity and the outputs are maximised in terms of economic and social impacts, how we continue to maintain our global position, optimise business pull and research push and how to recruit, train, reward and retain the best talent. It made recommendations to Government that focus on the value of research to the UK, making people the focus and translating research into economic and social value.
