Enterprise & Business Support


The Enterprise Directorate within BIS works across Whitehall, the Regional Development Agencies and key delivery partners to ensure that Government – national, regional and local – understands and responds to the needs of entrepreneurs and small businesses.

Two Business People

BIS's Enterprise Directorate has specialist expertise in policies to both strengthen the enterprise environment for small businesses and to enable more people and communities to set up in business. The Enterprise Directorate's policy work is supported by a strong research, statistical and analytical function (Analytical Unit) , and it maintains international links, especially with other EU member states and with the United States.

Enterprise Strategy

Alongside Budget 2008, the Government published its new Enterprise Strategy, setting out the framework for driving forward enterprise policy over the next few years. The Strategy (PDF) underlines the Government's vision to make the UK the most enterprising economy in the world and the best place to start and grow a business, focusing on five key areas which can enable this vision to be realised:
