Exploiting the electromagnetic spectrum

Foresight project looking at the exploitation of the electromagnetic spectrum to ensure increased UK innovation in the future.

The electromagnetic spectrum, from radio frequencies through optical to x-ray, is the basis for a wide range of vitally important technologies that have applications in areas such as communications, health and security.

The UK has a long history of world-leading research across the electromagnetic spectrum but in the past has not always moved from invention to innovation to secure the full commercial potential of these discoveries.

The aims of this project were to:

  • identify areas of long-term opportunity across the electromagnetic spectrum
  • assess these areas against UK capabilities
  • agree a plan of action to help the UK exploit these areas

Four state of the science reviews were commissioned to inform the analysis.

The project was sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry.
