One of GO-Science’s key roles is to capture good practice and make sure departments and agencies are clear about what is expected of them in their use and management of science.
GO-Science publishes a number of key guidance documents as well as working with departments that produce their own strategies for investment in research.
Science and Engineering in Government
Science and engineering are pivotal to good policy making and sound government. The Government’s approach to the management and use of science is set out in Science and Engineering in Government: An Overview of the Government’s Approach (PDF, 2.0 Mb) .
This document sets out in one place the key elements of how the Government manages and uses science and engineering to improve policy and delivery.

Guidelines on the use of scientific and engineering advice in policy-making
The Government Chief Scientific Adviser’s Guidelines on the use of scientific and engineering advice in policy-making set out the way in which government departments should obtain and use scientific analysis and advice in policy-making.
First published in 1997, these have since been updated three times following public consultation, most recently in 2010.

Departmental strategies
Departments publish science and innovation strategies that link science and research to departmental objectives. The documents are also the basis for future research investment.
