Decision tree

Is your item a finished product?

A finished product is described as 'any device or equipment that has a direct function, its own enclosure and - if applicable - ports and connections intended for end users'.

'Direct function' is described as any function of a component or finished product which fulfils the intended use specified by the manufacturer in the instructions for use for an end-user. This function can be available without further adjustment or connections other than simple ones which can be performed by any person. This gives you a guide but don't treat this as a precise definition. There might be examples of equipment where an "enclosure", for example, is not needed.

Example: A Scart lead for home entertainment equipment is used for transmitting information by means of electricity, falls within the definition of electrical and electronic equipment and could be considered to fall within the scope of category 3.

Example: A power lead for a computer. The primary function of the power lead is to enable the computer to work properly. The lead is within scope and will usually be in same category as the host item.

Example: A computer will have a keyboard, mouse and screen. These are finished products in their own right, fall within the definition of EEE and are considered to fall into Category 3.

Example: A battery charger may be supplied with a product or on its own. When supplied as part of a package or for a specific purpose then it will usually be in same category as the host item. A generic battery charger is a tool and therefore would fall under category 6.
