Peter Mason elected President of OIML

9 Sep 2010

OIML news article on the appointment of Peter Mason as President of OIML.

Peter Mason, CE of NMO, has been voted in as the next President of the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML).  The election took place at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Committee, which was held in Orland, Florida (USA) from 21st to the 24th September 2010.  He will take up his new position in October 2011, at the opening of the 46th CIML Meeting for a 6-year term.  In the meantime Peter will be joining the Organisation's Presidential Council and working closely with the existing President, Mr Alan Johnston.

The 45th CIML Meeting also appointed Stephen Patoray as the new Director of the International Bureau of Legal Metrology(BIML), with effect from 1 January 2011.  The Bureau, which is located at the Organisation's Headquarters in Paris, provides the Secretariat for the OIML.

Commenting on the election, Peter Mason said:

"I am very honoured by the confidence which my colleagues in the Committee have shown in me and I am looking forward to the challenges of helping OIML make an even more effective contribution to international metrology and international standards-making".

The International Organisation of Legal Metrology (OIML) is an intergovernmental treaty organisation whose membership includes 57 countries which are full members (each of which is represented on the CIML) and 55 countries which as Corresponding Members, participate in OIML as observers. It was established in 1955 in order to promote the global harmonisation of legal metrology procedures. Since that time, the OIML has developed a worldwide technical structure that provides its Members with metrological guidelines for the elaboration of national and regional requirements concerning the manufacture and use of measuring instruments for legal metrology applications. According to 2007 World Bank figures, OIML Members cover in total, 86 % of the world's population and 96 % of its economy.

The BIML is the Secretariat and Headquarters of the OIML, ensuring the day to day running of activities and the planning of longer term actions. It coordinates and informs Members of the International Committee of Legal Metrology (CIML) of technical work undertaken by OIML Technical Committees, organises OIML Conference and Committee Meetings, and manages the finances of the Organisation.
