Regulation

Better regulation

Effective and well focused regulation plays a vital role in correcting market failures, promoting fairness and increasing competition. The work we undertake at NMO is designed to develop an effective weights and measures and Hallmarking regulatory regime providing appropriate information to, and protection for, consumers and business, whilst at the same time minimising the costs of compliance for business.

Weights and measures legislation

NMO has responsibility for regulation in the area of weights and measures across the UK. The aim is to ensure that consumers, and indeed business, have the information on quantity that they need to make informed and confident purchasing decisions.

Hallmarking

Hallmarking involves the independent testing and marking of articles of precious metal to indicate they conform to legal standards of purity (fineness). These tests are carried out in the UK by Assay Offices in London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh.

Gas & electricity

The statutory responsibility for the metrological performance of Gas and electricity meters was transferred from Ofgem to NMO on the 1st April 2009. The transfer has resulted in NMO becoming a single point of reference and expertise for the majority of measuring instruments used for trade.
