Aerospace, marine and defence technology
Aviation Environment
BIS supports the aerospace and defence sector on a wide range of technology activity, for example: Environmental Impact Of Aviation.
BIS ensures the international regulations and standards that are developed to minimise the impact of civil aviation are adequate, fair, contribute to the aviation industry's sustainability and are not in conflict with the legitimate interests of UK aerospace industries.
This requires policy development, co-ordination of research activities, environmental model development, project environmental assessment and environmental forecasts and scenarios. Close co-operation takes place with the Department for Transport, which takes technical advice from us. We co-operate with the International Civil Aviation Organization, European Civil Aviation Conference expert panel on the Abatement of Nuisances Caused by Air Transport (ECAC/ANCAT), United Nations Economic Commission For Europe (UNECE), and the Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC).
The National Aerospace Technology Strategy of the Aerospace Innovation and Growth Team
This is coordinated through the Aerospace Technology Steering Group, which is a stakeholder group of industry and government chaired by Ric Parker, Director of Research and Technology for the Rolls-Royce Group. It reports to Ministers through both the National Aerospace Technology Strategy Group, and the Aerospace Leadership Council.
European Commission: Community Research And Development Information Service (CORDIS)
The European Union runs Framework Programmes to support research. Civil aeronautics has always been a part supporting research in industry and universities.
Group For Aeronautical Research And Technology In Europe (GARTEUR)
GARTEUR promotes collaboration between European countries in civil and military aeronautics research.
European Transonic Windtunnel
The UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands have a windtunnel in Cologne for the testing of aircraft models. The UK involvement is currently shared by BIS and MoD.
Air Transport Project (European Research Area Network)
The objective of this project is to increase cooperation and coordination of research activities carried out of a national and regional level in European Union member states.
