Chemicals industry

Looking up at blue sky above a chemicals factoryBIS's chemicals unit works with industry to promote productivity and competitiveness, and represents the interests of the UK chemicals (excluding pharmaceuticals), plastics and rubber processing industries in the development of government policy and regulation.

These web pages offer team contact information and an overview of current major issues. We work with individual companies, trade associations, Regional Development Agencies, and other stakeholders to:

  • build effective relationships with key companies and intermediaries
  • develop high quality analysis and understanding of these sectors
  • develop and take forward with the industry agreed strategies on raising commercial and environmental performance through manufacturing best practices, access to a world-class science base, and enhancing the skills of its employees
  • champion the industry's legitimate interests in Government and elsewhere, to ensure that regulatory and fiscal policy offers an optimum balance between environment, health, safety and competitiveness promoting opportunities for investment
  • help the industry compete in a global environment and ensure there is fair competition with foreign companies.
