Composites
The Manufacturing and Materials (MM) Unit encourages UK industry across a number of sectors, to make use of the unique properties of composites in existing and new products and seize opportunities from the increasing demand for composites in new sectors / applications. The focus of our work will be on those markets where the UK can create a distinctive capability and competitiveness.
Composite materials (or composites for short) are engineering materials made from two or more components. One component is often a strong fibre such as fibreglass, quartz, kevlar or carbon fibre that gives the material its tensile strength, while another component (called a matrix) is often a resin such as polyester or epoxy that binds the fibres together. Composites are increasingly being used in applications where there is a demand for materials which combine low-weight with high-strength.
The National Composites Network (NCN) connects all segments of UK composites expertise, fills key technology gaps for the future and signposts and facilitates end user access to the most appropriate source of assistance. Full details of the NCN may be located via the link in the External Links Section of this webpage located to the right of this text.
The Manufacturing and Material Unit (MM) is developing closer ties with the UK composites industry. The National Composites Network is a unique Knowledge Transfer Network jointly funded by government and industry embracing the entire UK Composites industry and its supply chain.
