Economic development

Newcastle - Gateshead quayside

This Government is committed to building a new economic model, which aims to create a fairer and more balanced economy - one that is not so dependent on a narrow range of economic sectors, is driven by private sector growth; and has new business opportunities that are more evenly balanced across the country and between industries. Central to this is the creation of Local Enterprise Partnerships - joint local authority/business bodies that reflect genuine economic areas to promote local economic development - and closure of the Regional Development Agencies. In taking this work forward the Government wishes to ensure an orderly transition which maintains focus on delivery.

These pages explain how we work in partnership with regional and local bodies to drive growth across the country by promoting investment, skills, employment, efficiency, innovation and competitiveness. They include information about Local Enterprise Partnerships and the Regional Growth Fund, which was set out in the Local Growth White Paper.

There is also information on how we are working with the European Union and internationally to achieve the Department's strategic priorities and to have the greatest impact on productivity; the role of the Industrial Development Advisory Board, which advises on regional assistance; and the approach of Government Departments working with devolved administrations.
