Local Enterprise Partnerships - background
Local enterprise partnerships will see business and civic leaders work together to drive sustainable economic growth and create the conditions for private sector job growth in their communities. This is a real power shift away from central Government and quangos and towards local communities and the local businesses who really understand the barriers to growth in their areas.
An invitation to local authorities and businesses (PDF, 1.9 Mb) was issued by the Secretaries of State for BIS (Vince Cable) and CLG (Eric Pickles) on 29th June 2010 to leaders of Local Authorities and leaders of Business inviting them to work with the Government to help strengthen local economies.
In response the Government received proposals from the following areas to create Local Enterprise Partnerships. These were considered against the Government’s expectations regarding support from business, economic geography, local authority support, ambition and added value - the detail of which is set out in the Local Growth White Paper .
