Apprenticeships

Apprentices learn on the job, develop skills and knowledge and gain qualifications, whilst earning money

As employees, apprentices work alongside experienced staff to gain job specific skills. Off the job, usually on a day release basis, apprentices receive training with a local training provider such as a college.

They work towards a work based qualification such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and other nationally recognised qualifications.

There are over 180 different career choices on offer in 80 different sectors.

Growth in apprenticeship numbers

A statistical first release (SFR) shows that 457,200 apprenticeship starts were delivered in the full 2010/11 academic year.  This represents a 63.5% increase on 2009/10 figures.  There was growth at all levels of learning, for all age groups, and across all sectors and all regions.  The SFR gives data on apprenticeship success rates for 2010/11 for the first time: 76.4% of learners successfully completed their apprenticeship.
