Every Business Commits

Every Business Commits sets out areas in which Government and business can work together. This is part of the Prime Minister’s vision to build a Big Society where businesses, communities, voluntary bodies and charities help solve problems.

The deal

Government is committed to creating a stable economy, with lower taxation and less regulation. In return, the government asks for the commitment, creativity and innovation of businesses to help grow the economy and tackle the wider challenges that face Britain.

In particular, businesses are asked to focus on five priority areas:

  • creating jobs and developing the skills of their workforce
  • supporting local communities
  • larger businesses supporting small and medium sized enterprises to grow
  • improving the quality of life and well-being of their employees
  • reducing carbon and protecting the environment

Why bother?

We believe that Britain’s most successful businesses are those that invest in their people, communities and the environment.

People have more choice and information about businesses than ever before, so corporate reputation is critical to businesses of all sizes, if they are to succeed and grow.

Social Enterprise

Some businesses are set up with specific social or environmental objectives and re-invest their profits in the business or the community to support these aims. Known as Social enterprises, they operate across most business sectors, including community interest companies, charities, companies limited by guarantee, mutuals and cooperatives.

Social enterprises are an important sector, representing approximately 6% GDP. The sector is structured in a similar way to the private sector with the majority of firms being small to medium sized firms.

Some large social enterprises that you may know of are Divine Chocolate, GLL, Welsh Water or Central Surrey Health Care.
