Bias training

Bias training focuses on overcoming stereotyping and preconceptions. It goes beyond a focus on under-represented groups, and recognises that diversity and inclusion relates to everyone, not just minorities. It is about thinking, feelings and beliefs

Bias training addresses changing behaviour and not stereotyping people by treating everyone as an individual. It creates a better level of self-awareness and generates an improved knowledge of the issue of bias.

Bias awareness training focuses on:

  • Invisibility – the absence of images, texts, and contributions of underrepresented groups
  • Stereotyping – the assumption that particular characteristics are typical of members of a particular group
  • Selectivity – misbalancing the contributions of others
  • Unreality – indicating or diminishing the importance of others’ concerns
  • Fragmentation – grouping contributions and/or images of or from minority groups together
  • Isolation – spatially locating minority groups together
