The internet
The internet is now the number one recruitment channel for many organisations. It includes using the organisation's own website, online recruitment agencies and social networking sites
Advantages
- low cost, in comparison with print media and television
- provides access to thousands of candidates, all over the world
- processing applications can be quicker
- some new online technologies can pre-screen, test and rank candidates before a recruiter sees them. It can therefore be less time consuming for recruitment staff
- specialist websites can target specific sectors and skills
Disadvantages
- disadvantages those without internet access
- start-up costs may be high for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Cost
Cost is generally relatively low in both money and time.
Length of the process
The whole process (depending on the number of expected applicants) can be fast.
Potential for discrimination
- may exclude those with access to the internet
- potential to favour younger candidates who may be more computer literate
- screening technologies can overlook individual strengths
- web pages should be accessible for candidates with disabilities
Conclusions
There are potential problems with internet accessibility, including age and lack of relevant IT skills, economic background and affordability of equipment and disability. However, using the internet is an effective use of resources.
