Posters and flyers

This method offers many of the advantages of recruitment via word of mouth and employers' referral schemes, with the added advantage of being able to target specific local groups

Advantages

  • inexpensive
  • can be distributed by your staff
  • can target specific groups

Disadvantages

  • they can be discarded/papered over quickly
  • it may take time researching best locations to display

Cost

Inexpensive but may be fairly costly in time to research locations.

Length of the process

Short, although design work may take some time.

Potential for discrimination

It may be discriminatory if posters and flyers are not widely distributed. The location of recruiting may disadvantage certain groups (for example, distributing in bars may exclude Muslims). This method of advertising will also disadvantage candidates with visual impairments.

Conclusions

Using posters and flyers may be useful for less specialised jobs; not so relevant for professional and graduate recruitment unless targeted at university campuses. This method can be particularly useful if you want to attract the attention of specific minority groups, or for recruiting people within a particular local area.
