How to choose an assessment method: Self–Reflexive Questions

Things to consider when deciding which assessment methods to use

Issues to considerConsider:

  • how much will it cost to conduct assessment?
  • do these tests measure all the diverse ways of achieving the same goal? (for example, IQ tests only measure certain ways and types of problem solving)
  • does the method discriminate against certain people or certain groups?
  • how may stress affect a candidate's performance?
  • do the assessment methods effectively mirror the role applied for?
  • will the assessment methods predict work performance?
  • do the assessment methods reflect the skills and abilities outlined in the person specification?

When considering which assessment method(s) to apply, it is worth asking whether the chosen method(s) is/are assessing the diversity of applicant's abilities or favouring those with prior experience of the testing method(s).
