Requesting references
References are normally sought from a candidate's current or most recent former employer. In the case of a candidate who has recently finished a programme of education or training, it may be appropriate to obtain references from tutors or teachers
In the case of a candidate who has had a lengthy absence from work or has little employment history, personal or character references can be requested. However, often, these can add little value as candidates are unlikely to name a character referee who wasn't going to be complimentary.
When requesting references, only ask for factual information to be provided, such as:
- dates of employment
- job title and duties/responsibilities
- level of performance
- salary
- reason for leaving
- Timekeeping and absence record (be wary of what is provided here as data relating to an individual's medical conditions is classed as sensitive and personal, and as such, consent should be obtained from the individual prior to releasing such information)
Many employers will only provide limited factual information in references in order to avoid any legal issues or complaints arising.
