UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) LATEST UPDATE:

The UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh announced the extension of the successful UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI). The new programme will be funded by both Governments and will run from 2011.

Overview of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI)

UKIERI is a programme initiated in 2006 (and initially running for 5 years to 2011 and worth £20million) that aims to substantially improve educational links between India and UK, ensuring in the longer term we become each others’ partner of choice in education.

All projects under UKIERI are collaborations between teams in India and the UK to deliver joint projects. Mutuality and Sustainability are key features of the programme.

Achievements to date

The three main strands of the initiative are Higher Education and Research, Schools and Professional and Technical Skills. The initiative also offers an opportunity for high level policy dialogue between the two countries on areas of mutual interest.

The final round of awards has been completed and to date UKIERI has achieved the following against its targets set in May 2006:

In addition the programme has run:

  • 20 PhD Scholarships
  • 43 Research Fellowships
  • 88 Travel Grants to facilitate partnerships

In 2008 two new initiatives began, focused on student mobility between the two countries – Study India Programme (in the summer 2009 just under 200 British graduates spent 3 weeks in Mumbai or Delhi to learn about India’s education, culture and business, repeated in summer 2010) and Indian Graduate Work Experience programme (providing opportunities for India’s top graduates to take part in internships with companies in the UK).

Partners

UKIERI is partnership between multiple stakeholders including Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the British Council and devolved authorities of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has also pledged matching funding for science related collaboration under the initiative. The programme is currently funded by 3 corporate champions- BAE, GlaxoSmithKline and Shell.
