George Freeman MP announced as new Life Sciences Adviser
David Willetts has invited George Freeman MP to advise him on life sciences.
Mr Freeman was elected MP for Mid Norfolk in 2010 after a 15 year career in biomedical research. He will be taking a high-level view across the sector and advising the Minister for Universities and Science on the economic impact of life sciences in the UK. He will also identify opportunities to build understanding between Government, business, and academia.
He will be working alongside Chris Brinsmead, the Government’s Life Sciences Business Adviser. Mr Brinsmead will continue to provide advice and challenge to Ministers at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department of Health and champion the UK as an investment location of choice.
Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts said:
“The life sciences industry is an important driver of growth and is vital to rebalancing our economy, creating jobs and developing high-end skills. The Government is committed to ensuring we maintain this success by identifying new growth opportunities and strengthening links between business, the NHS and academia. To do this we need to draw on the expertise of those with first-hand experience of the life sciences industry. I look forward to working with George and I am certain that BIS will benefit from his knowledge.”
Commenting on his role, George Freeman MP said:
“I am delighted to be given this opportunity to support the Minister by advising him on developing policies to support economic growth through scientific innovation. The UK has a worldwide reputation in this field that we can build upon; by improving links between research, Government and industry not only can we be at the cutting edge of invention, but we can reap the economic benefits too.”
