Government stock-take of regenerative medicine in the UK
The UK is well placed in the field of regenerative medicine with an enabling regulatory climate, global excellence in our science base, ground-breaking clinical studies, a national stem cell bank and significant recent investment by industry.
The Coalition Government has announced its clear support for regenerative medicine. Indeed, Vince Cable, Secretary of State for the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills recently referred to regenerative medicine and stem cells as areas in which the UK is a world leader.
And David Willetts announced on Monday that the Departments of Health and Business, will undertake a "Regenerative Medicine Stock-take" to ensure that we build on this position. Supported by the Research Councils and Technology Strategy Board the work will ensure the UK is able to take account of future developments and that public sector support is appropriate and flexible. It will identify barriers to commercialisation, analyse the current state of the science, and assess the value these products will bring to the NHS and patients.
We will seek your views in the New Year and post information on how you can get involved in this work on the Office for Life Sciences website.
