Report on regenerative medicine by the Office for Life Sciences/Department of Health published


The Office for Life Sciences and the Department of Health published a report into the regenerative medicine field (PDF, 1.3 Mb)  on 18 July 2011. This report, developed in consultation with experts, and other Government partners, demonstrates the UK’s leading position in this area, with world-class science, a strict but facilitating regulatory framework, key infrastructure, and early commercial exploitation.

The field also faces steep technological, regulatory and strategic challenges that need to be overcome to successfully commercialise recent promising discoveries. This is why, in addition to the Government’s commitment to funding basic science and translational research, the report sets out a series of ten actions to support the sector going forward.

Launching the report, David Willetts, Minister for Universities of Science said:

“Regenerative medicine has great potential to deliver new therapies and benefit the UK economy.

This report demonstrates that we retain a world leading position in this area and highlights the Government’s commitment to tackling the field’s strategic challenges through greater coordination and focussed support”
