How we make decisions

Major policy proposals and decisions

BIS publishes copious information about our policy proposals and decisions.

Impact Assessments

Impact Assessments are prepared as part of the process to make policy and provide an assessment of the costs, benefits and risks of a proposal on businesses, charities or the voluntary sector. They identify and assess all the options, both regulatory and non-regulatory and determine whether the benefits justify the costs.

Public consultations

The Consultations pages provide information about the Department’s current policy proposals and details of consultation documents, including formal written consultations that have closed and are no longer open for response and those that have closed and have a published full Government Response to the consultation.

White Papers

White papers published by BIS can be identified in our Publications pages by searching for "White Paper" in the free-text search facility.
