Cosmic Vision

    Following a decision in 2011 by ESA to reformulate the L-class Cosmic Vision missions as Europe-only/Europe-led missions a study team was established to develop the fundamentals of a new mission to replace IXO, whilst maintaining its science goals as much as possible.

    Following a decision by ESA to reformulate the L-Class missions as European only missions, in April 2011 a new Science Space Team (SST) was formed whose task is to study if and which of the science goals of the original EJSM-Laplace mission concept can be achieved. The new mission is now renamed JUICE (JUipter ICy moon Explorer).

    Solar Orbiter is an ESA-led mission due for launch in 2017. It will travel closer to the Sun than any previous mission, going to within approximately a quarter of the Earth’s distance from the Sun.
