Measuring polar ice


Satellites can be particularly valuable for taking measurements over remote and inaccessible parts of the world like the polar regions.

CryoSat-2,  launched on the 8th April 2010, is measuring the thickness of Arctic and Antarctic ice with unprecedented accuracy. These satellite measurements will show whether the polar ice sheets are becoming thinner and deepen our understanding of the relationship between ice and climate change.
