National funding opportunities


The UK Space Agency is responsible for the national Aurora programme, previously funded by the Science and Technology Funding Council. This programme has the following elements.

CREST (Collaborative Research in Exploration Systems & Technology)

A funding scheme to support preliminary technology development in order to position the UK space industry and academia for involvement in future space missions. This scheme encourages partnerships between industry and academia.

There are currently no Announcements of Opportunity.

Knowledge exchange programme

This programme is aimed to assist Aurora technology to be exploited in other industrial sectors or science disciplines.

It is anticipated that there will be an AO in spring 2011.

Aurora science preparation programme

This programme aims to develop the science community. To date there have been 4 calls funding 7 fellows, four students and an ESA networking partnership fellow.

There is a current call open for funding for students, fellows and research assistants. Further details can be found in the announcement of opportunity. (PDF, 105 Kb)  The closing date for applications is 6 December 2011.

Instrument hardware programme

This programme is fully committed on building instruments on the ExoMars rover.
